I live in a small town and the little gossipy things are starting to get to me. What is the best way to ignore the gossip and the little petty things that these simple people tend to focus on? Its starting to piss me off...

It's gotten to the point where if I want to know something I've done, doing or going to do - all I have to do is go into the local pub!!!

It really infuriates me and I need to find a way to either tell them to mind they're own business or ignore it...

Any ideas on how to handle and respond to it???
Thanks...

Coming from a small town myself, I completely understand. But sadly, there is NOTHING you can do to change or alter it. I find that people who have grown up in a small town understand the culture and don't even seem to mind when people know all their business.

My way of handling it was to keep things to myself, and not give people anything to talk about. If I had 'overnight' company, they parked a block over and left before the dawn's early light. I didn't discuss my personal life with anyone - EVER!

I tended to look at the whole town as a fish bowl...watching everyone swim around. And I just made sure that I never hopped in for a swim myself...

Let people believe what they want to believe. If you act defensive or try to stop it, it'll only get worse. Trust me. Take it from someone who knows.

If people ask you if something is true, laugh it off. Make it seem like it's something trivial, something you don't deign to stoop to. Don't ask the person where they heard it, because you'll either hold a grudge against that person for the rest of your life, and you never know what thir intention were.

In the end, the only thing that matters is the people who matters. As long as they know the truth, it's not that big of a deal.

If all else fails, move into a bigger city :) .

It ticked me off too. I had a female friend stay overnight once and the next day the town was abuzz thinking I had a guy over (I was divorced) When I told them her name, suddenly they thought I was gay. Then the old biddies started making up more stuff about me and spreading it around town. I was constantly having to correct people. You can't win.

I ended up moving out of town and never looked back. It was that bad.
