Behavior is very purposeful and very necessary in order to get our Needs met--physically and emotionally! We have to get these met all the time or go into a state of semi-deprivation which only moves us into high-gear to get those Needs met!! Emotional Needs--Belonging, Power, Freedom and Fun (Wm. Glasser's Basic Emotional Needs)--are just as powerful and essential as physical needs!! Even pets express bhv that demonstrates these! Leave a pet alone for a while and they are all over you when you get back! They need some Power in the relationship or are "browbeaten" and depressed. Freedom to explore and Fun to run, sleep, eat etc when they want and need to, is essential as well. IF their were NO "consequences" (results of the behavior) there would be no bhv--just die! Also neg. consequences help us LEARN productive bhr. Unless we learn to get our needs met in society, we would be "wild things".
