whenever the pc needs more memory than you have installed in your pc(RAM) there is where virtual memory comes out. a piece of the harddisk will be used as a temporary storage. Virtural memory is in Windows swap file on hard disc. You may need to free up space. CCleaner is very good for this and available on download.com.
so you can increase it either by cleaning your hard disk, or buy buying a better one. but i suggest buying more RAM rather than the hard disk

select System from the control panel, in there set the memory space available for the paging file [virtual memory] or probably best simply allow Windows to set it.

when operating system runs a program, it may happen that not enough space is left in RAM as it has been already occupied by other programs. so what the OS do is that it removes a program from RAM and temporarily stores it on harddisk. so that new program could be put into RAM. when the turn of olg program comes it is again put back into RAM. so effectively some space on harddisk is used as if it is on RAM and hence the name virtual memory. In case of windows u can increase the size by following steps:

1. Right click on my computer and go to 'properties'
2. Go to 'advanced' tab
3. In the performance group box click on 'settings' button
4. Click on 'advanced' tab
5. Click on 'change' button

Now u can specify size in the dialog box which appears. plz take care to press set button after u make changes otherwise changes will not take effect even if u click on 'OK' button

virtual memory is the memory that windows ( or a mac) creates on the hard drive instead of having electronic ram memory You can increase it safetly However because it is a mechanical process ( writing to the hard drive) it is very very slow Better to add memory It all depends on the physical logistics of how many ram slots you have To save space some laptops have only one slot If you have 2 slots you can add another stick of ram ( if it is open) Often one step down from current size ram goes cheap as people with only one slot have little use for it ( most likely that would be a 256 mb in this day and age or a 128 for older laptops)

Windows XP has this feature called Virtual Memory..

When your RAM gets full....windows has no memory to adjust the active programs/services/dlls etc........here virual memory comes into bussines...windows creates a file called pagging file on the hard drive & uses it as extra RAM, this way the work goes on.

XP is known for handeling Vrtual Memory badly.

So do this to change.

go to my computer properties>Advanced>settings>a...

do not let XP use the pagging file on C:(one which contains ur OS).
change it to some other partition, Which has max free space & set the pagging file to that

Virtual memory is hard drive space used as short term memory. The windows operating system controls this on it's own. Make sure you have 10+ GB of free hard drive space.

RAM will increase you vm. to increase it you must buy a stick of RAM From your nearest office depot or office max. Make sure that your motherboard will support it first. to see how much ram you have now go into your control panel and click on systems.. at the bottom of that it should tell you... the slowest is 128mb...then there is 256 and 512 mb. 512 is good. dont expect to find it cheap unless its used. to install it make sure you pc is off. take off the side panel and you will see some long skinny slots in there... pop in the ram and u r good to go.
