The Web offers tremendous opportunities for those who know how to harness it. You hear of stories of people who earn thousands if not millions of dollars from doing business on Web. While there are many scams (same way in the traditional business world), there are various ways you can legitimately make money on the Web.
Here are the main ways you can earn money from the Internet:
1. Sell products on the Web - Big boys like Amazon or Lillian Vernon online catalog or smaller businesses like BigKidsVideo.com or Candle4Less.com all sell products on the Web.
You can either sell: (a) through your own storefront through your own website or applications such as Yahoo Stores; or (b) sell through online auctions like eBay

2. Information Delivery. Others such as About.com or EuropeforVisitors.com create content and monetize their content in a number of ways:
a. Advertising - there are several ways you can earn money from advertising:
1. Join an advertising network. Advertising networks are organizations that aggregate Web sites that offer advertising space, and sell banner ads (and other advertising options) across them. Traffic requirement is often a minimum of 5,000 monthly impressions, although many do not accept sites hosted by free page services.

2. Participate in contextual advertising networks. Contextual advertising are text ads delivered based on the content of the web page using an automated system.

Yahoo! Publishing Network (currently in beta and available to US publishers only) http://publisher.yahoo.com/

Clicksor http://www.clicksor.com/affiliate_programs.php
Contextweb http://www.contextweb.com/
Bidclix http://www.bidclix.com/
Bidvertiser http://www.bidvertiser.com/
3. Sell advertising for your site directly. This is admittedly a more difficult route for a small business site wanting to earn advertising revenues. But hey, as they say: "no pain, no gain!"
b. Affiliate Programs - you sell other people's products that your audience may be interested in; and you get a certain commission after the desired action was done (whether a sale, a lead, subscription to email newsletter, or however this is defined)
c. Paid online content. Hoovers.com or WebmasterWorld.com Supporters forum all require paid subscription before accessing the information
d. Content licensing and syndication. Some publishers such as the Associated Press get paid every time their content is published elsewhere

I'm not entirely sure what it is that you're after but you seem to be asking about the legitimacy of making money online. I'll be the first to tell you that it does happen, and it is real. I'm not going to post a dollar amount over your head and try to entice you to do anything but people do make some decent cash working online. What it really comes down to is what company you work with, what your "work" involves, what type of compensation that they're offering you, and what support (if any) do they provide you. If you have found the answers to these questions and are comfortable with the answers, then you have found a decent way to generate some extra cash online! I've been involved in network marketing for quite some time now and I spent almost a year getting pushed around by these companies that had me working FOR them. At any rate, one of the few things I am proud to say is that one of them seems to stick out more than the others and that is because it provides you with more than "just another way to earn you some extra cash online," it actually provides you with 100% real time support. From the moment that you plug in to the community, you can literally feel the difference. Anyways, I'll provide you a link that you can visit if this is what you're looking for: http://www.athomeincomesolutions.com
I hope this provides you a considerable amount of guidance. Good luck to you!

Depends on what your skills are. Neil Clark Warren, for example, had a Ph.D. in psychology and 35 years of counseling and research experience, when he started making money on the Web with a business called eHarmony. He had a unique skill, quantitative measurement of compatibility in a relationship, which was translatable into an online business. These days, eHarmony has over 12 million members; not all of them are paying members, but at $20/month, it's still a lot of money. Match.com had to hire Dr. Phil in an attempt to replicate eHarmony's success.
Now would Dr. Warren be able to have a multi-million dollar business if he decided to start an auction site or a Web hosting company instead? Probably not; his strength was understanding of relationship psychology, and he used it to his advantage.
The moral of the story: the best way to make money on the Web is one for which you have unique skills that serve a genuine need...

I found teaching via the Internet very profitable, but you need to partner with a local school or University. Answering surveys can make you a little money, but selling on eBay has the most potential for real money, if you have time and can buy low and sell high.
