That is what I am told but the rents on craigslist seem to be cheaper in Maui - and I shop at Costco. So please explain what is more or less expensive. I have a family with two kids.

Thanks

Yup, Maui is WAY more expensive than O'ahu....

Read this: 33% in Isles not self-sufficient
Honolulu Advertiser, Saturday, February 3, 2007

At least one-third of Hawai'i households don't earn enough money to cover their expenses without outside help, according to University of Hawai'i researchers in conjunction with a new study. It estimates an O'ahu single parent with two young children has to spend about $1,700 a month on housing, $787 on child care and $631 on food. The family is allotted $60 a month for transportation — for city bus fare — and $342 for miscellaneous expenses such as non-prescription medicine, diapers and personal hygiene or household cleaning products. The same family would have to earn a little MORE to make it in Maui County, and about $3,000 less in Kaua'i. The Big Island was the cheapest place for the family, which would have to earn $46,658 to be considered self-sufficient — $7,500 less than on O'ahu.

Well, it sure seems like you've already made your mind up. Our gas is now $3.19 a gallon; i think it's $2.68 on O'ahu? Wishing you the best of luck... Oh, and when you're swimming at the beach on Maui with your kids, keep an eye out for all of the fecal material released from the cruise ships.

The Citizens and Visitors of Maui, Hawaii are disgusted that current law allows the dumping of human waste in our precious ocean waters. Through the EPA, our Governor has the ability to designate our Whale Sanctuary Waters as no dump zones

Hawaii in general is expensive!

but I believe Maui is a bit more expensive than Oahu. not too familiar with Maui, but there's lots more to choose from in Oahu coz the cities and towns are bigger, more locals. Maui seems to attract tourists in getting away therefore it makes sense that a lot of the places there would be more expensive.

There is Walmart in Maui. But if you ever go to Maui, eat at Mama's fish house.

They are really close, but Maui is probably a little more expensive because the gas is pricier (so is housing, etc.)...
