It will be hard to track what you are downloading. You can be caught if you are uploading a torrent file like most users do. Why not just pay for a service like Napster if you are so concerned?

No, torrents themselves are not illegal.

It may be possible that the content that the torrent file points to may be indeed illegal. The torrent file may download a movie which has been captured illegally BUT another torrent my allow you to download a document that I have created or your friend might have created.

wikipedia has an artical in torrent (BitTorrent) files here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent

I hope this helps

Copyright means that ONE person has the right to make copies. If you download a file you're making a copy on your computer. If you're not the copyright holder, you violated copyright law. It doesn't matter whether you sell the copy, give it away or delete it as soon as you download it - downloading copyrighted content is illegal. (And it's a civil tort - you can be sued, and you WILL lose, as all those people whom RIAA sued did.) Anyone who tells you that downloading copyright content isn't illegal isn't even wrong (they'd have to be more right to be wrong).

Torrents in themselves aren't illegal, it depends what's in them. If you're downloading a copyrighted film or album or TV show or game or whatever then yes, that's illegal.
