I think it depends alot on the age of the children. I know that all we can do is steer them in the right direction. Hopefully we do not implant biases on their way of seeing people and as they grow give them an environment in which they make healthy choices. I KNOW that as a parent you are walking on shaky ground if you try to choose friends and associates of your teenagers. ex. If I forbid my daughter to associate with a certain person, that is who she will sneak around to spend time with. All we can really do is teach them to have good values, and when we see them making mistakes let them know how we feel and in those situations have some control over how time is spent with those persons we'd rather they avoid. Let them learn in a safe way who they really want to relate to.

How much influence? On a scale of 1 - 10, I'd say about a 5.

I am a parent of 5. I have influenced my kids, but they STILL go out and find the like-minded children/teens and do the stuff that they want to do.

One of my 5 is a Christian social worker, one a chef, (after 5 years of opting out of the system,) one a prof, and two are rebel teens still. All of them find/found that friends are not always what you expect and you have to keep some and dump others.

If I could be where the kids are 24/7, it might be different. I homeschooled for 4 years, but making and keeping friends is not my job, I can only suggest, restrict occassionally and advise.

Would like to see others' answers.

Well, I think what you're looking for are our opinions on whether parents should be able to tell their children who they can and cannot have as friends?

Personally, I think parents should be aware of who their kids are hanging out with, and if the friends are really bad influences, (into drugs, etc), then yes, I think the parents should tell the kids not to hang out with them. However, if they do it by yelling and screaming, it will just make the kids that much more determined to see their friends. They have to be able to talk calmly and lovingly to their kids and tell them they are really concerned about their health and future, and with all that, the kids may still not listen.

The intent of the parent should be to help steer their kids away from things/people that will be bad for them in the long run. That and loving their kids is what a parent's job is all about.

As a parent im not to keen on the idea of telling my children who they can and cannot be friends with but i would like to be there in helping them choose good friends. i dont want them to hang out with the wrong crowd and get into trouble. I think certain influence is important. the reason behind this answer is that as i was growing up i had my parents wanting to choose my friends for me so in turn i started making friends with the people i knew my parents would hate. and so in turn i started lying who i was with. and i really dont want to be the "blind parent"

Sounds like a good topic to me. Make sure you find some sources to back your opinions up though, otherwise your teach might find your opinions as being just that...your opinions.
