I read in Yahoo! Games that it's made for laptops, so that they don't overheat. And that it has a new window setting so that you can keep your IMs and such open, unlike the typical Sims games. My question: Can I get this for my -actual- home-based computer, or does it have to be a laptop?

Try this link it should tell you all about life stories. I'm sure you can run it on a desktop - it is a totally separate game from the Sims 2 So if it appeals to you then buy it. It is optimized for laptop play.

no, it does not have to be a laptop. Its kind of Sims Lite. No expansions and stuff. Still entertaining though.
