Origin is from the Latin word: statim
It means immediate, and is supposed to be used when the answer or response is critical to a patient's life..as opposed to "my golf game tees off at 2 and I want to know the answer so I won't be late"
Unfortunately, "stat" can be overused in hospitals, causing the response to be lessened. Sort of like the boy calling wolf, eventually responders think it's just another "stat" One hospital study showed the number of lab tests ordered "stat" was 25%.

I don't know if its a acronym, but it means immediate. When the nurse tell the doctor to come stat that means asap or immediately. Hope I have answered your question.
