Not at all, when you insert a CD in your computer, programs such has windows media player and itunes allow to rip those songs and create mp3 files. Because you bought the CD or what ever its ok for you to rip music.

Hope that helps.

As long as you are NOT ripping the music from the CD to sell the music, it's perfectly legal.

If you own the CD it is not legal .
But if you rip to sell without compensation then it's illegal .

It's not if you are using an authorized program like Windows Media Player. So it's not illegal unless you are going to rip those files to make copies and sell them.

Selling bootlegs is definitely illegal.

I remember news reports last year (in the UK) where the music companies said they wouldn't prosecute anyone for copying their CDs onto, say, an MP3 player, although apparently it technically remains illegal. See here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/5053658.stm for details of the news story. So, yes it sort of is, but unless you're passing it on they don't care.
