Your mom might be experiencing a condition call Neuropathy which is caused by poor circulation. There is a treatment that has been proven to have great results in treating this condition which causes great pain in your feet and sometimes loss of balance. it is called Anodyne Therapy. I am currently employed with a Physical and Occupational Therapy facility that administers this treatment and have witnessed the great results our patients have received. The treatment increases circulation and reduces pain through the use of Infrared photo energy which is a low intensity heat that penetrates deep into the tissue of your feet. The treatment is noninvasive. For more information you can visit the website below.

This may or may not be important. There are several causes for pain in the feet. One common cause is plantar fascitis, an inflammation of the tissue that connects the muscles of the feet to their anchor point behind the heel. Massaging the feet may tell if this is the case. When massaged, it would feel like a crackling to the massager's fingers.
There are other causes for chronic pain. One is diabetes. Uncontrolled glucose levels in the bloodstream cause MANY breakdowns in the body. One of which is diabetic neuropathy, which is pain caused by damage to the actual nerves. I have diabetes and this is an awful pain and needs addressed now. And by the way, ask your mom if a cane is embarassing, it sure beats a wheelchair or even worse if she falls.
