Well, you have no choice. The water has to be shut off. No heat. Hafta get elec heat till the landlord is contacted and he gets a plumber in.

There is a tape that you can buy at Home Depot or Lowes that has a sealant which is waterproof. It may not be totally effective, but it could hold out until you can get a pro.

The other option is that there are fittings at Home Depot for copper pipe which already have the solder in the fitting. If you cut the pipe that split and can get the couplings and piece of pipe you need in place, all you have to do is heat them up. Once you heat them up, the solder will release and seal the fittings. Its an easy fix if you are able to do some repairs. O/W you might just want to try the sealant tape.

Some home centers have a metal clamp, preferably 2 bolt, with a piece of rubber that you can wrap around the pipe and tighten. These work great for quick fixes. If push comes to shove get a piece of rubber about 3/16" thick fairly larger than the split and a handful of hose clamps. Make the rubber as smooth as possible and, starting in the middle, cover the entire piece with hose clamps. Turn the water back on and keep tightening them if you need to to stop any drips. Also, usually in the water heater section of a store, there are flexible connectors with compression fittings on both ends. You probably have 3/4" pipe. You can cut the pipe and install one of them. That could be a "temporarily permanent" fix. At some point it should be fixed with the proper materials.

that's my experience. I grew up in a house with warm water radiators. The temperature became sturdy or perhaps, not in any respect too warm or too chilly, except if a lamp became on next to the thermostat. I surely have now lived 14 years in a house with forced air warmth and that i visit assert that I hate it. The temperature receives quite chilly and then large warm air fills the abode. even as the furnace is on, i'm actually sweating it really is so warm for those jiffy. The furnace is going off, that's comfortable for a lengthy time period, receives chilly, then the cycle starts back. definite, it heats the abode up "quickly" like you want, yet quite, that's not comfortable. And it makes countless noise--the warm water radiators at my mum and dad' abode not in any respect made any noise. in case you block any of the grates, you get undesirable move or one room may be chillier than others. The grates on the floor assemble dirt, airborne dirt and mud, change and different small gadgets. it really is a complete discomfort. it should be uncomplicated to characteristic significant air, that is about the purely bonus. I surely have an oil furnace which became once maximum excellent yet is likely 25 years old now. I doubt replacing the furnace may change the experience a lot, although. i'm certain persons will quote analyze & articles on that is extra effective and why, yet i imagine the surely experience of residing with it really is extra significant. i'd pay extra for even, quiet warmth.
