Please keep away from historical or archaeological sites.
You could do a lot of intellectual damage with indiscriminate digging for 'treasure'. Coins have a very important function in dating a level.
As the other guys said, stick to the beach, or green roads.

It is illegal to use a metal detector on public land. You need to find a private land owner who will give you permission. You are not likely to find a bunch of old coins in TN. Much more likely to find agriculture related items like shoe nails, plow parts, etc.
