I see the term referenced all over the place and sadly, I have no clue what it refers to. This, along with a few stray grays, may be the first sign that I'm getting old ;)

While emo may be short for emotional (as in the feeling) that is not what it is, entirely.

Originally the term was referred to "emotional rock"- it is a style of music that whilst being seen as "goth" has a more intense, lyrical nature to it and "emo's" who follow that genre often dress/act to reflect the music they listen to.

So you were kinda right- it is almost a goth thing but it is actually referring to the type of music as opposed to individual people. so "he is so emo" means that it's a guy who listens to emotional rock.

I am a High School teacher, and although it is short for emotional that is not all it means.
It is also a genre - like a style of dress, music, behaviors that go along with it.
They love the music with depressing lyrics and the black clothes and long straight hair.
I have to tell you though that my "emo" students are pretty much always some of my best. They do their work, are respectful to me and other students and rarely cause problems.
To me, although their may be exceptions, it is more like kids who have a genre, like surfer or greaser and hang around together, listen to the same music, etc. But other students seem to think it is something to stay clear of - but we are talking teenagers here.
They may have home issues, etc. or are acting out their age - but seem to be good kids and not at all like the gang-bangers or druggies. Most of them are pretty smart but perhaps immature or in need of certain types of peer bonding.

It is a degrading term used to stereotype those that are different from the mainstream. "Emo" is considered to be short for emotional. Those whom society regards as "emo" are said to suffer from depression, wear all black, and write poetry and short stories about death. Even though I would not be considered to be "emo" I think it is sad that society has come to making these stereotypes, epically about the creative. Not every person who wears black or who writes poetry is depressed or resorts to self mutalation.

Typically emo stands for emotional, where as, if people use this term, it refers to someone that has a depressing and moody behaviour.

PS: hope this helps :)
