We seem to have lost touch with the fact that well intentioned people can disagree on significant issues. Today, when someone disagrees with our world view, we seem to honestly believe that the individual, entity or party must be totally and utterly discredited and destroyed.

It is possible, but in politics is it undesirable. Politicians have to do every nasty little trick they can to score all possible victories over their opponents. Most of us realise that this cheapens them and makes them look like weasels. The most damning thing about it is that they really have no choice. If their opponents do it and they don't, their opponents will score more 'points'. It is horrific that they must be reduced to doing this. To win in the rat race, they must become rats.

Is it really any wonder that good people turn bad when they become politicians ?

Youre asking for a level of marturity and sophistication not to be found in modern US Politics. Instead of honest free debate, what hwe have is innuendo, "push-polling" (about the most disgusting practice ever in US politics), name calling.

All anyone needs anymore are accusations with no proof or verification. While I don't always agree politically with John McCain, I respect the man and I respect the sacrifices he made for this country during Vietnam, however, I do NOT respect Bush for not even finishing his Air National Guard service in Texas OR Alabama (and the last time I looked, NEITHER of these states are in Vietnam).

The following link is a fine example of what Im talking about. When one cant use facts to back up their opinion, well, lies are just as good.:

How true a statement. For us of the more intellectual thinking, it is possible do disegree, and still respect the other person as a person. So many times, especially here on this site I've gotten reported for nothing but disegreeing. I think some would probably want to fight if they could get to me just for my "personal" veiws on abortion.

Please do not lump Democrats and Republicans together when you talk about politics of personal destruction.

This sad situation is the direct result of the nasty politics of the right wing. It started with Lee Atwater and has been perfected by Karl Rove.

The lies and smears are always orchestrated by the GOP and the right-wing biased media.

Democrats stick to the facts and the issues, and get destroyed by the lies and smears of the right wing.

Political disagreements are what civil wars are made of. In politics it has always been nesicary to destroy one's opponent. In the 19th century this led congressman and senators to duels and personal physical assaults on each other, while in session on the floor.
So I would suggest things are better today, physical assaults are not encouraged.

Yes. But not around here. This place is infested with control freaks who want to own the thoughts, feelings and VOTES of others.

I still believe in live and let live.

I don`t think so.Sad thing is that seems to be the trend now.To me it is all a joke, since i myself don`t think much of dishonest people and unfortunately there seems to be way to many of them. The more money you have the more power you have to destroy others.Nobody seems to be able to fight fair and square anymore.

It's possible to disagree, but it's becoming more and more impossible to win without digging up dirt...or even manufacturing it.

That is because at this point, one side is lying and being lied to by its leaders. There is NO truth in one of the positions. Honest debate reviles dishonesty.
