The diffraction comes from the edges interfering with the wave motion of the photons. If the aperture is narrower, less light will be able to get through without interference.

Due to less no of secondary sources from obstacle, the destructive interferences are less and hence a larger diffraction pattern.
Alternatively you can also use 'complementary screen' theorem if you know about diffraction through a slit.

It is geometry and you have to do the math. It is a matter of how far off axis you need to be to fit one extra wavelength from one edge of the aperture as compared to the other. The angle gets less and less as the aperture gets bigger.
