The ingredients in Carmex are menthol, camphor, alum and wax.
Anyone who has tried the lip balms (not only carmex but the other brands as well) to quit can readily attest that when you stop using, your lips become negatively affected for several days or weeks. The physiological dependency is there. But it does not mean that everyone who uses lip balm will get addicted, but just like alcohol or cigarettes, some people seem to be more susceptible to becoming dependent. But people generally have predisposition towards the phenomena known as "lip licking", the habit most doctors say causes dependency on lip balm.
So addiction happens based on the way you use it.

any chapstick can become addictive. just the motion of putting it on (just like raising a cigarette to your lips) but do your lips need it? Well, no. But if you have perpetually chapped lips then you just need to try something different (the carmex in the jar works A LOT better than carmex in the tube; try that if you haven't all ready). I really like chapstick Lip Moisturizer(blue tube) or Burts Bee's wax. The more your lips sting when your put on chapstick the more chapped your lips and you need to use more. Plus look at what you are eating and drinking. Saltier foods make your lips more parched and if you aren't getting enough water that will dry out your whole body, especially your lips! if you need more info, let me know. I've tries all kinds of lip stuff.

I suppose anything can be addictive. If you are talking about Carmex as in chapstick, I wouldn't be worried. However, if this is some other kind of Carmex, possibly. Use your Carmex in moderation.

I used to think that too. In fact all chapstick i thought was addictive. There is no scientific proof but the theory is that when people use chapstick, they are so used to their lips feling slippery and silky smooth that when it wears off, you are so unused to the dryness that is actually normal, that you use it as soon as it wears off. the theory that your lips dry while using it too, is also fake, it is because you lick your lips when it wears off too, which in turn, dries out your mouth. so its safe to use carmex but dont use it too often or youll be so used to it that you use it all the time.

I'm addicted to the Burt's Bees kind. If I don't have it on, that dry feeling makes me batty. My cousin has a similar problem with Chapstick, so maybe.
