I think it came out in 1979 and NOT 1987. I also know that the remake is due in 2008. Although this movie is looked back upon fondley by those who've seen it, it has NOT reached cult status yet. Movies are getting labeled cult so loosely now, just because they're older and not because they have the following required to be considered cult. This movie does have an audience, just not a cult following.

That's a very good movie--there was a lot of fights at movie theaters when that was showing. The gangs in NYC created quite a ruckus over it and they had to stop showing it in many locations.
The fantasy element of the film added to the overall feel of the movie. The scenes with the Fury's gang were the best--whoever thought of a gang dressed in baseball uniforms, wearing face paint and wielding bats while wearing roller skates was quite creative. The Warriors seemed like they were almost super-heroes. They beat up on just about all that tried to stop them from going home to their turf in Coney Island.

It's a wonderful film. Walter Hill would subsequently hit the big time with "48 Hours," but "The Warriors" is a terrific, stylish thriller about a street gang from Brooklyn that gets framed for a murder they didn't commit, and has to fight their way back to their home turf. Weird (and improbable) rival gangs confront them at every turn, and the ensuing rumbles are choregraphed like some twisted violent ballet. Fun!

Excellent movie, it had everyone afraid to take the subway or walk home at night on the streets of New York back in the late 70's.....Great symbolism throughout the movie, especially the subway scene, where the prom couple meats the Lead Actor and Actress......it was totally off the hook!!!!!!!!

You should have seen it at the drive in when it came out. There were more fights at the end of that movie because it wound people up. Like 5 guys could take on the state of NY? I would have worried about the Riffs. The Orphans were goofs though. "See what hapens when you mess with the Orphans?" Yeah... you burn up a car in their ;hood and run like hell.
Great movie for its' day!

It is fun but a bit campy.
Still it has style, I think a lot of credit should go to the killer musical score.
