Or an opportunity to take time out of our busy lives to celebrate the one we love.

(I have a similar answer for someone else's question...)
I agree with you...
February 14, Valentine's Day has evolved into another money grubbing holiday!
It should be about celebrating love with your significant other in the middle of winter to dissipate the winter 'blahs'.
Instead, it has become another 'holiday' to put pressure on men (& some women) to remember the day and buy or do something fabulous otherwise they are guilted into believing they don't care.
That is if you have someone special in your life... single friends of mine really focus on their singularity at this time. I've been through it too... longing to share that special day romantically with someone significant.
Thank goodness I could step back and see the ugly monster of consumer opportunity.
Consumerism once again has taken the wind out of the sails of the spirit of a day...just like Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter and soon to be Halloween.
It makes me sick that people can't enjoy the holiday for what it is anymore... the guilt of not having a store-bought gift to give is too much for many.
I'm a little bitter. (grin)
It just take the specialness or preciousness out of any holiday when we are bombarded with advirtisements telling us we need to buy this, that and the other thing or we aren't good people.
My interpretation of Valentine's Day and other holidays.
Thanks for the opportunity to vent a bit.

It actually isn't a commercial holdiay there was a saint valentine, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Valentine
But halmark has taken the holdiday and made into something very commercial and I agree if you are not with someone it makes a person feel lonley.

all holidays in the U.S. have been commercialized. This holiday isn't made to make people feel lonely though. In fact, if you have a boy/girlfriend, you'll be the exact opposite! (I usually feel lonely though!)
Read the link below to find out about the origin of V-day. (It's kinda surprising)

Yep.
I just cannot wait until I get my mega-idea for getting people to throw perfectly good money my way.
It is a good holiday in that the chocolates are 75% off shortly after the holiday.

I wonder how long it will take the greeting card industry and the gift wrapping industry to begin promoting Earth Day?
And Then, I wonder how many commercialized and highly promoted Earth Day gifts will be ecologically friendly.
[can you yet imagine the questions, like: What shall I get my friend for Earth Day, we've only been dating for six weeks?]

I agree 100%! No corporation is going to tell me when and how to say I love you to the people I love and love should be about the other 364 days as well, not just the one day!!
