When to, or not, set thermo on heat pump setting?

The ac unit runs when set on this feature. Learned this due to heat pump. Problem - don't know benefit of using or leaving thermo on reg. heat setting.

I really don't undertsand the question. Do you have a heat pump and another type of home heating, like Gas?

The heat pump setting will turn on the A/C compressor, but it works opposite of the way it does for A/C. Think of it as cooling off the outside air. IMHO, heat pumps aren't good in really cold climates

Your question is to confusing to understand. if the statis not on heat pump then what kind of heat do you have electric, gas, or oil or what?
