If you really want to do something for the poor in our country, then form a NGO and do social work.
By giving money to the poor. you will make them beggars and lazy.
Teach them a trade , give them training , give them vocational training and then they will become emplyable.
People who get things Free, forget to do work and expect more and more each time. They will be termed as beggars and will lose all self dignity.
The best method is to teach them to earn by themselves.

How long can you collect money and give food to the poor?
In this manner the poor will become poorer .
If you want to help them, then organise yourself in a group and do social work on a larger scale and give training so that the poor start small enterprises and increase their income and live in selfrespect. They will not be a burden on the Government but they will be contributing to the income of the nation.

Your aim is good but the means to achieve it is not perceived in the proper perspective... The array of good advices received so far fill the gap.. Collecting money is not good.. many social workers /organisations are known to misuse the funds for personal benefits and so people are generally suspicious of those collecting money for charitable purpose..

A group of well intending and rich friends may join and train the poor in a selected - poorest of the poor - area in some profitable vocation, by donating the tools and hiring the teachers.. Sale outlets may also be arranged...

Canteens supplying nutritive and hygienic food at low cost may be opened in such places... philanthropic hotelers may be asked to donate some food items daily to the canteen (collecting materials instead of money may be ok for most people, as the chances for misuse are low)... Similarly I know that some pharmacies donate medicines for medical camps / retail textile shops donate clothing / footwear shops come forward to donate footwear... If a good work is started there will be many to join... people do not know how to start good work and are often ready tojoin a good cause..

Rather than enrolling the poor, enroll service minded and well placed youth to serve the poor... There is no greater service to society than such activities... you need not even go to the church... sing and pray with the poor brothers and sisters, encourage them with rich appreciation for their latent skills (by identifying such skills in a survey), empower them with skills and earn their confidence and the blessings of the Lord!

You've never heard of food stamps? We already collect money from our society members (taxes) and use it to provide food programs for the disavantaged.

Rather than putting a band-aid on the problem, the best idea would be to attack to root causes of poverty and enable all Americans to afford food, clothing & shelter. We need more, better paying jobs available and to train the unskilled to fill those jobs. History has shown us that the best way to do that is to lower taxes on those who create & provide jobs and give them the incentive to grow their business and employ more people.

You can get them better jobs. U can get them a stable income so that they can think of bettering their family-conditions and sending their children to school, etc. Such opportunities open new doors of opportunities for them and their lives could only expand amongst them all. Good luck. Hope everybody starts thinking like you. Letz be citizens, not just subjects of our nation.. :-)

What should be done is to give poor training in livelihood generation activities, link them to micro-finance so that they can buy raw material for the income generation activity, link them to market for the sale of their articles and crafts that have produced and create a marketing linkages for them for permanent outflow of their products and steady stream of inflow of income to pay of the loan taken from micro-finance agencies and also save for themselves.
