Did Emily Bronte describe or imply that he was mad as in slightly insane? or did she try to make it more like he was just very much in love with the character of Cathy?

He isn't mad.
If you are interested in his chracter, read the novel "H: The Story of Heathcliff's Journey Back to Wuthering Heights" by Lin Haire-Sargeant which is a story of those three years when Heathcliff is away from Wuthering Heights.

No he was not mad, but he was tortured by knowing that his love was not returned in full because she was always obsessed with the other guy (Ashley I think) who married her friend. He was successful in business and wealthy and popular with the community but still he was not enough in her eyes, that is probably enough to drive any man insane but still he loved her. Buy the DVD its great although Elizabeth taylor is a little actressy in it!

Mad? Meaning insane?
No, he was not insane.
He was lonely, an orphan who fell deeply in love, he was misunderstood & cast out, afraid for the love of his life & himself, he was tormented, treated cruelly, powerless & passionately trying to save their love
