Ignorance. If people can't have respect for someone else's different way of life and what they believe in, then there's bond to be continuous, pointless arguments. Noone once to learn from someone different than them, just very close minded. Noone is great, if so, you would think they'd stop all the turmoil going on in the world.

Most Atheists don't preach until set upon by idiots who want to inflict their puerile beliefs on them.
The best Atheist put down of these nuisances came from a close friend.
The Jehovah's Witnesses called on her. she listened politely and when they asked would she read some of their literature she replied, 'yes, if they would read something of hers.' Puzzled they agreed. She gave them a small green book...they looked even more puzzled when they opened it. 'It's all in foreign writing,' they said.
'Don't you recognize it? It's your New Testament in the original. When you can read that, come back and talk to me about it. By the way hows your ancient Hebrew?'
They never returned.
My friend was an academic studying ancient languages and knew the Christian scriptures intimately in the original languages.
It always amuses me that Christians seem to think non believers don't know the Bible or anything about religion. Most non believers do and have thought deeply before coming to their possition. Christians in their arrogance think if we only heard and really understood their message we'd join them. They can't seem to understand that we have and rejected it!

I don't preach about atheism. I don't go door to door spreading the atheist way. I am who I am. I am a good person...do what is right...and live my life. If someone asks me if i go to church or if I am a Christian, I tell them that I am an atheist. I don't like it when Christians get in my face and tell me I am going to go to hell if I don't get god in my life. I don't make a big deal about it, I just walk away.

The atheists I know usually don't "preach" until someone starts annoying them about converting to a particular religion.

becuase eveyone thinks they"ve got "the golden ticket" when it comes to their belief system, otherwise they wouldn't bother with saying they were set in their beliefs. perhaps your generalization is unfair. we have many atheist/agnositc griends who come share our (jewish) holidays with us, and they are always quite respectful. but then, so are we. perhaps the people you are talking about feel defensive because theists "always" try to convert them, meaning, like you, they feel bombarded with people trying to convert them more often than they would like. try to see it from their side - maybe they wouldn't be so defensive if they knew that you didn't have a problem with what they believed.
