Let students do a home energy study. You could make it more or less involved for different abilities. Record and analyze the use of electricity in your own home/ how to conserve water (shower/bath), how much does energy really cost:compare data to find out which source of energy is cheapest and has least impact on the environment. Is going "greener" cost efficient. Consumers want to know if appliances really save energy costs. Maybe this topic will help you brainstorm something specific for your students.
