Basically, when selecting a laptop, you are going to use the same parameters as you use for a desktop; ie, what do you need that laptop to do? Since you're going to be using it for poly courses, you'll want to select a laptop with at least 512mb of ram, preferably 1 gb of ram would be optimal, large hard drive, good size screen, (I like my 15.4 widescreen,) built in wireless, as well as a modem, at least 4 usb ports, and the best battery you can get, if you're going to be away from a power source.
(Battery power should last in excess of 2 hours.)
Good luck.
I like my Toshiba Satellite A105 series laptop.

The First thing you need to decide is how much are you willing to spend. I would pick from these brands, whoever has the best deal at the time:
Toshiba, Sony, HP, Compaq, Levino
I tend to favor Levino as it is an IBM division. I would stay away from Dell as Dell has some consumer problems they NEVER resolved. There are certain Dell laptops, for example, where they have a mother board problem being connected to the case. If you push on the bottom corner of the case, the laptop fails and Dell wont do anything about it. I was very disappointed about the way Dell resolved that issue. They basically told consumers that, even tho this is a design flaw, you consumers are out of luck.

2 HP/Compaq
----Reliable, and decent price dont get the store warenty the menufactuer offers one for less money than the store and you get your comp back in about 2 weeks. the store warenty is about 3-5 weeks
