The cheapest hotel in Tokyo is £20 a night, and that is a capsule hotel. A better bet would be to sleep in an internet cafe, they have overnight deals, and have booths that can be locked.. If you want to be more plush, the sky is the limit, and you can literally spend as much as you want... assuming that you want to save your money for drinking (which can be £2.50 a beer at the cheapest...) and techno goodies... and if you stay in a cheap hotel, then you could spend as little as £200 on accomadation and food for the week, providing you restrict yourself... the subway is cheap, so it is easy to get around, and the main shrines around Tokyo are cheap to get into... so if you live frugally, you could get by on as little as £500 with a moderate amount of drinking involved...
Good luck mate, Japan is awesome

I just came back from a college trip over in Tokyo, We stayed for just over a week, and excluding flights and accomodation, I managed to live on £200 (which gave me 45,000 yen) and still had a bit (though not much) for tourist spending and buying gifts etc.. So it depends on exactly what you want to do. I'm not sure it is the most expensive for everything, I think London is! Eating out was actully quite cheap, as a group of 17 we practically ate out every night, averaging just 2000 yen each. Having a Japanese friend did help. I think going to the less touristy places means prices drop a bit, though I'd learn a bit of japanese as most of our waiters didn't speak english (plus polite to anyway, and very usefull, you only need some basics). Travel can be a bit confusing, as diffrent companies own the trains, luckily, if you get confused you can always fare adjust to each station, transfer. I think I spent about 5000 yen on travel, you could probbly go cheaper by sticking to subway and not taking JR, but not too sure.
Of course, you will need a lot more money if you want to buy presents to bring back!
Have a great Time.
One more think, have a look for weekly mansion hostels, we stayed in one for just over a week sharing with four in each apartment for 23,000 yen each. we stayed in Kiba, which is just outside the centre of tokyo, quick to get into on the metro. Not actully a bad place, I was expecting a small room, but turned out to be quite a reasonlable size place.

I went for 2 weeks in Nov 2005 and took 1000 quid and came home with plenty of change although had no accomodation to pay for. I had loads of trips out and ate out all the time. The pre packed food in the 7 11s if inexpensive and good quality plus theres loads of cheap "cafes" that the businessmen use.
Window shopping costs nothing and the great thing about Japan is you can play with new technology in stores for free!!
I found the trains to be cheap (compared with the uk) and reliable.
Have a fab time

Stay in socalled Business Hotels for about $ 75 a night, eat in cheap places, ride the subway, buy city map and walk on foot a lot, then Perhaps $ 1200 for boarding and lodging. Take another $1000 for shopping etc.

How much money you spend depends entirely on where you eat, what type of restaurants you go to, which attractions you go to, how much and what kind of souvenirs you buy, how far and how often you travel etc. etc. Therefore, no one in this forum can give you an accurate estimate of your spending habits. That said, I have been to Japan 5 times, and have never spent more than 25,000 yen for transportation, food, attractions and souvenirs for a 3 week period.

If you have your hotel and flight already booked I would say you may want about $1,000. You could spend it all or there is a high possibility that you will have change. I would also advice you to get the railway pass from a traveling agency or the Internet cuz it will let you go places with just one fee. The trains can get pretty expensive if you want to go the suburban areas.

Youth Hostels are cheaper than the capsule hotels, but not as private. There, you can save a lot of money. But I would go along with the $1000.00 for one week for room and board. Then an additional grand for fun.
Total $2000.00. That of course does not include the airfare to get here. With that, you can use the fare wars to you advantage.
Good luck!

Try to book your accomdation before you leave, and if you are planning on travelling around japan it is cheaper to buy a japan rail pass before you leave the uk.
Incase you under budget make sure you take at least one credit card with you for unseen expenses.

You can stay at hotels such as the Toyoku Inn for as cheap as 6000-7000 yen a night. If you use trains or buses, then you'll be ok. You can also eat cheaply at places like Yoshinoya. Just keep an open eye for relatively priced places.
