A good place to start with is night school. You could try different cultural cooking classes or a new language I have made tons of friends from all over the place through adult learning centres. Hope this helps. You could also become involved with a charity where you could help as well as make new friends. Voluntary work is such fun and it helps so many people.

- a local library - hang out in the section(s) of your interest(s) and see who else is checking out the same books. Often a friendly comment can lead to a conversation.
- join Freecycle or a similar site, where you request or give stuff away online and people in your area can post to answer or pick it up. I'm not kidding: I just responded to a simple post for a set of shelves - met and made friends with some Celtic/folk musicians from Britain who had just moved to Canada - coolest people! Oh, and you simplify your life as you give away more 'stuff'....
- volunteer at a pet shelter or rescue organization. You meet caring people who love animals.
- volunteer at a children's afterschool drop-in program (such as the Boys&Girls Clubs run. You'll need a police check but the experience is really worth it - you'll meet the kids, the kids' parents, and your new co-'workers'!)
- volunteer at a senior citizen's home (see above)
- your local community centre will have a hundred and one programs you can sign up for. Obviously, the other people in those programs are there because they have the same interests (watercolour, jewelry design, learning about computers, etc.)!
- try a church/synagogue/mosque/other place of worship - even if you have a wonderful church family already, a different congregation can really open new doors. You'll meet fascinating people who have a belief system/a set of moral guidelines for their lives - often a 'safer' way of making friends than, say, in an internet chat room. Plus everyone in a congregation often knows everyone else, so it's an already-established community that provides a safe and welcoming environment and can help you find your niche.
- stop at a ethnic cafe/bar/social centre/club. Toronto (Ontario, Canada) for example is full of little 'private' clubs in public areas, from the "Macedonian Men's Social Centre" to the "Persian Embroidery Club" You'll get to taste all kinds of interesting food/drinks (Turkish coffee....bouche amuse....dim sum....) and it's guaranteed you'll meet interesting people!
Hope those ideas help! Remember, your personality and uniqueness is what will build a friendship - a location and common interest is only a starting point. Good luck!

The best ay to meet diverse people is through the internet. Have you tried something like Myspace? Or a chat room site?
If you want to meet them personally, I'm not sure what to suggest.
