How do you define a best player? by the number of wins? the number of trophies won? by his media coverage or simply by his ability to be an exceptional Football player (yes Football not soccer). If you answer the later one, many names comes to mind and none of them have surpassed one another but only equaled one single fact: they all brought joy to spectators and made a difference in the game and on the field.
Maradona, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Charlton, Butragueno, Eusebio, Platini, Zico, Maldini, Socrates, just some names to remember and beside how can we vote for players only without mentioning keepers? Yashin, Zenga, Dasaev, schmichel, Preud homme, pfaff.
All these players have certainly had an impact on the game of football.

Hi,
it is an almost impossible question to answer as many people have their personal favourites.
There are a few, however, who seems to stand above their contempories. George Best was probably the most skilful player ever and when 'on his game' could have mastered just about anyone in history. He was, though, flawed...he had a personal life that impinged on his playing life and was detrimental. He drank, spent late hours in night clubs and lived the 'champagne lifestyle'.
Pele was a more complete player, devoid of the character flaws that inflicted George Best. He is still a respected spokesman for the game.
Others (despite an illogical World Cup incident) include Zinadine Zidane, who was an extremely talented and skilful player. Maradonna, of course (hated by the English for his 'Hand of God' goal that put us out of the 'World Cup) He was a very talented and brave player and deserves to be up with the best.
Players will probably fly at you with all the commitment of their personal fans and there will never be a definitive answer.
For what it is worth I rate the Irishman, George Best, at his best, as the most skilful player ever, with Stanley Mathews (pre-Pele) as an equal. Though for my money Pele, was the most complete player and deserves his place among the sport's officianados as the 'best player ever'.
Good luck with resolving this question, though I suspect you will have little success.
Cheers,
BobSpain

Pele was not a Football Player!
Soccer Yes
Futbol Yes
Football is a totally different animal. Pele would have got wrecked in FOOTBALL (unless he was the Field Goal Kicker)
