I I have done homestays too..
I think he would like to see some games like baseball or soccer games, how about taking him to Tokyo Dome, experience Karaoke with friends around.. As cherry blossoms may not be seen but, a bus tour or boat tour will be another idea to show him around.. do some sports like taking him to fitness centers...do bowling..
A 17 year old boy is very independent.. if he has somebody to go with him around the town with same ages, he would really appreciate that, or if there is any school events in your area or community events, he could learn about the cultures... I don't know which part do you live.. He might try the sushi, for first timer, they would be very curious about this Japanese foods like yakitori, and yakiniku or okonomiyaki.
The students from Japan who stayed with us are very discipline and very independent..once I took them to a place, they would know what to do the next time they go there..it was very nice of them to learn from other countries and tried their best to learn English and other languages.. they also experienced to be with animals, did some mowing and cooking etc.. being a host is not hard if you give them chance to discover things they can do, not being pressured of what they need to do.
I think sharing what you have is the best no matter how small it is.. and learning cultures and way of life in your country.
this boy would know that you have open your home for him and he would appreciate whatever you can offer, but it is so nice of you to know what he wants to do, where to go and what to eat...You would indeed have good times with him and your family..if your son is around, I am sure he would hang around with him more..and go somewhere they would love to.
I guess your son would be the best person that can answer you for he has been with this boy before..
Ichi ban and me has the same opinion when it comes to asking your son...

good day!

Japanese Game Centers! They are the biggest attractions to guys that age. The games are so cool and tons of fun. Another cool thing would be an amusement park like Space World, or Mitsui Green land. Whatever you have up there in Tokyo. Tokyo Disneyland may be a little too childish for a 17 year old.

If he boy is athletic, bring him to a place where he can do his sport. Bowling is always a big hit.

Enjoy.

Being a Aussie boy, and having been to Japan. I would say he would be interested in the electric city area with all the electronic gadgets and the arcades. Food wise I found that the stir-fry styled foods and currys would be more to his tastes. But if in doubt, do not be affriad to ask what he would prefer. Also I think he would be interested with anything that would be car or samuari related..

I think a boy of seventeen may be interested in Akihabara with all the gadgets. How about a Karaoke box? Food may need some thought. Not all foreigners don't like sushi, but I find they always like "korokke" and "shabu shabu". Taking them to a "okonomiyaki" or Yakiniku" shop could be good too.

naoko ,
I guess it depends where you live?
Living in Tokyo, of course go to Akihabara, also Shibuya might be good (of course for lots of nice looking girls and shopping, he is 17 after all), Harajuku for lots of interesting shops and a temple too. Outside of Tokyo, how about a trip to the Ghibli Musuem, Miyazaki is popular in a lot of Western Countries or a day trip to Fuji-kyu Highlands.
I think the best thing to do is to establish what he likes and go from there, your son should have a good idea from when he visited australia, what did he do?????
