Actually, we occuppied both Germany and Japan for a few years after the war and assisted in rebuilding. You may remember the Marshall Plan?
And we still have military bases in Germany and Japan today, 60 years later.
And we need to do exactly the same thing in Iraq. 60 years of US presence, and the Middle East will be as peaceful as Europe. Nothing but train services and an audoban between countries, universities, banking, and free trade.
If only the liberals would stop pressuring to brinig the troops home. What a dumb thing to do! We have a chance to change the world for the better, and leave it to the liberals to want us to fail instead of be inspired to greatness.
Do everyone in the world a favor: don't ever vote for a Democrat again. They're idiots.

Y E S, In order to stablize Iraq and maintain the
lawfully elected government of the country and
to ensure that there will not be anymore 9/11s
in this country and anywhere else in the world
and to show the Al Qaida Terrorists that we
will destroy them where ever they are, we will have to remain in the Middle East for years to come. I AGREE with Mahal's statement!!

History dictates we should have never entered Iraq in the first place, and like Germany, if we get out, Iraq will pick up their own pieces and build back, as Germany did, and Japan...With support, but not an Army.

If History is used as an indicator, then yes we must stay. I'm not sure how long we must stay, but we owe it to the people of the region to stabilize that country. Iran will settle down once Iraq regains her strength.

The last four years of history mandates that we either get out of Iraq or have a regime change because those running the show obviously don't have a clue.

The Brits stayed in Malaya for 12 years to ensure peace and stability before handing it completely over to them.
We owe it to the Iraqis to help them get this fixed and operational before we leave.
EDIT:
Crazy Heart, my terp (interpreter) said it best. Handing the Iraqis the government early was like giving a Mercedes to a monkey and telling him to drive home.....
