"It is part of the general pattern of misguided
policy that our country is now geared to an arms
economy which was bred in an artificually induced
psychosis of war hysteria and nurtured upon an
incessant propaganda of fear." : General Douglas
MacArthur, Speech, May 15, 1951

Washington had been reelected unanimously in 1792. His decision not to seek a third term established a tradition that is now embedded in the 22d Amendment of the Constitution. In his Farewell Address of Sept. 17, 1796, he drew on the results of his varied experience, offering a guide for both present and future. He urged his compatriots to cherish the Union, support the public credit, be alert to the "insidious wiles of foreign influence," respect the Constitution and the nation's laws, abide by the results of elections, and eschew political parties of a sectional cast. Asserting that the United States and Europe had different interests, he declared that it "is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world," trusting to temporary alliances for emergencies. He also warned against indulging in either habitual favoritism or habitual hostility toward particular nations, lest such attitudes should provoke or involve the country in needless wars.

No it is not. We have no major budgeting for arms at all. Paul you know our military is terribly under funded and our troops went to battle without many things they needed. There is no longer any thing resembling a war economy. the citizens are barely touched by the war. Our economy is a peace economy and would be hard pressed to shift in any other direction.

Yes, Fascism is apparent whether it was in 1951 or the year 2007.

The only difference being that in 1951 the Republicans fought against Fascism, but today they welcome it with open arms.

He was talking about WW II and the industrial complex pumping out the tanks and planes and ships.

Turns out he was wrong. America adjusted fairly rapidly out of war and into world-dominating business. We're only now in recent decades losing our position. It's only natural, too. After the rebuilding of Europe and Asia, it should have been perhaps 20 years for the countries to grow to a point where they can compete with us again.

But when you take statements like this from other periods and compare them to today, you really have to bring the context with it. These issues we have today are so tiny in comparison to those of 1944 and 1945. These statements are really out of place.
