Remove the bulb and look for corrosion or rust in the socket. "bulb out" indicators work by sending a very weak electrical current through the wires. (Continuity check) If there is corrosion and that impedes the current from going through the circuit then it will tell you the bulb is out, while the bulb still works.

Also check all the bulbs by turning on different lights and checking to make sure they illuminate.

Oh man that sucks. I am not sure if it's because there is another bulb requiring change, or if it didn't recognize the one you put in.
