The Earl of Sandwich at a card party. Wanted a snack to eat whilst still playing so put some sliced meat between a couple of slices of bread so that he wouldn't make his hands too greasy AND only needed one hand to hold and eat it with.

The modern sandwich is certainly named after Lord Sandwich. Contemporary accounts refer to the sandwich often with a capital 'S' and date the invention to c. 1762.
However the exact circumstances of the invention are still the subject of debate. A rumour in a contemporary travel book by Grosley formed the popular myth that bread and meat sustained Lord Sandwich at the gambling table. The sober alternative is provided by Sandwich's biographer, N.A.M. Rodger, who suggests Sandwich's commitments to the navy, to politics and the arts mean the first Sandwich was more likely to have been consumed at his desk.
It is also possible that Sandwich's Grisons Republic born brother-in-law, Jerome de Salis taught him of the ways of dried meat and bread.

The 4th Earl of Sandwich-a guy called John Montagu.
Now John was an inveterate gambler and was so wrapped up in this pastime that he resented taking time out for a formal dinner. So he discovered that by putting something between two slices of bread he could eat and gamble at the same time.
This dates from the mid 18th century
