Many people come here insulting gays and lesbians -- calling names, harassing -- then they end it up using the line "free-speech", to justify their insults.

There are, some reservations in Article 5 Paragraph 2, (of the united Nations Declaration for Human Rights), for restrictions to protect an individual or collective's honour against personal insults or hate speech.

"Freedom of speech is always more difficult to defend when it crosses what passes for mainstream thinking."

Are haters aware of the consequences that a formal complaint (in a court of law) could have?

Dude...you think haters have the IQ to even understand your question? NOT. Their ignorance precedes them.

I think what you are saying is not without a point. However alot of 'gay haters' believe themselves to be 'in the right' They believe any same sex attraction to be abnormal. So even if we work on the assumption they are aware of the afore mentioned article they would work on the assumption they are right and everyone else is wrong. As long as there is a legal system that in the majority of cases supports that attitude, however well meaning that UN Declaration may be they will always be protected!

easily, there's a cut back. in accordance to the form AND my international geography professor, the cut back is :No slander and And it follows societal norms. curiously, the societal norm is to insult an entire community. humorous factor is that when you insult a faith different than Islam, it reasons an absolute uproar. yet while it is composed of Islam and insulting, it an a O.ok, bypass forward. And once you arise for it, you get blown awaway with the accusations of being a "religious enthusiast".

You know the way i see it is..to have freedom of speech it shuld be done with respect and integrity..a little knowledge of the issue that someone is talking about always helps too..it is a insult to use the freedom of speech plea just to hurt someone..but why should people learn to use this respect and freedom when the states and government have harsh things to say about gays themselves? think of gay marriages..controversy and harshness unless you are one of us or are close to someone who is gay. Why should the youth and the "righteous" develop a little respect for those they dont understand when the people who make our country's laws act the way that they do? That to me is not freedom of speech when that happnes.

Most of the people who start bashing others are just not as smart as they think they are. 2 badd thay aint got no edukasion. Just kidding. If those who bash would join a class in being more sensative to others then they too will be a better peson.

If you threaten people with court action, then you know that there's no such thing as freedom of speech.

Some people will always say things that make you uncomfortable. You should find new websites if that happens.

>> I see I got 2 thumbs down. That's an affront to my individual honor and if I ever find out who you are, I will press charges against you in the world court. Freedom of speech is dead. <<

Most of the bashers can't even spell correctly. What do you think the chances are that they know anything about the UN's Declaration for Human Rights?

Go ahead and make a formal complaint.

Good Luck.

You are assuming an ability to read. Obviously they aren't able to do that because if they were actually reading the book they claim justifies their hatred they wouldn't be posting on Yahoo answers.

freedom of speech is to ensure the right for someone to give their opinion. IT IS NOT THE RIGHT TO INSULT SOMEONE.

most constitutions prohibit discrimination. and thats the way it should be.

So you're just another one of those people who believe in freedom of speech...unless you don't agree with the content. Is that right? Freedom of speech for you but not for someone who happens to disagree with you? Who exactly is suppose to decide what is insulting? Maybe i'm insulted that you think this way. Then you don't have the right to call me a hater or decide what is "mainstream thinking". I'm insulted...so shut up.
