I live in Indiana and I am glad you asked this question.
Here's what I knew off the top of my head (I wish).
Indianapolis was founded as the state capital in 1821. Jeremiah Sullivan, a judge of the Indiana Supreme Court, invented the name Indianapolis by joining Indiana with polis, the Greek word for city.
I did know Indiana had something to do with the name (smirks).

Well, the city (Polis is Greek for City) of Indiana. Apparently Indiana was named to mean "the land of the Indians" and the capital was named by Jeremiah Sullivan, a judge of the Indiana state supreme court.

When the settlers 1st arrived, they had a habit of naming places after the 1st thing they saw...
EG. Little Rock, Virginia etc etc...
When they arrived, they saw an Indian eating an apple who because of the food in his mouth... made him sound like he had a lisp...
So it was originally called Indiansapplelisp... but because people back then couldn't read and write to well, it was originally written as Indianapolis...
and there you go...

I'm from Indianapolis...yeah Colts! But did you know that people from Indiana are called Hoosiers? That's a whole other can of worms, however....!
