Some of them I like, and some of them I don't. For instance, let's take "Flavor of Love", "I Love New York" "The Bachelor", etc-- this is not reality. It is a contest. How many people in real life do you know line up 25 members of the opposite sex to choose one to marry? I thought so...these shows are not real.
Something like "The Biggest Loser" would be more in tone to a reality show because it actually shows the real struggles, hurdles and obstacles that someone faces in order to achieve a certain goal. Go figure.

I don't watch much tv these days (I've been too busy) but I used to be a total reality tv junkie! I was hooked on Survivor (I missed most of last season & missed the premiere this season), the Bachelor, Average Joe, Temptation Island, Paradise Hotel etc etc. I find it fascinating watching real people reacting to situations. They're like real life soap operas. I'd have favourite characters & look forward to seeing them. I'd also live vicariously through them because they'd be on adventures that I'd never experience (I couldn't do Survivor! I don't even go camping! Ha ha).
My favourite show of all-time was Seinfeld. What was cool about it was how they would take slices of life. It was a show about "nothing" -- real life mundane situations (like forgetting where you parked or waiting too long for a table at a Chinese restaurant). What made it so funny (aside from brilliant writing & acting) was that I could relate to a lot of it. It had an honesty & freshness that no other show before or after has had (in my opinion). I still watch the re-runs even though I've seen them all a million times. I don't watch other sitcoms. I have no interest in tv dramas (I hate shows about death, cops, lawyers, doctors...I deal with enough negativity in my job I don't need it when I go home! TV for me should be a pleasant escape.) I also like HGTV because I love interior design & I like looking at beautiful homes & getting ideas to use in my own place (though on a budget!) Decorating shows are usually reality shows (like Trading Spaces, Extreme Home Makeover etc) because they are often real people showing their own homes rather than celebrities.
Maybe it started with the writer's strike. Networks may have decided it was cheaper to put unknown people on tv than to pay celebrities & writers a fortune for sitcoms etc. It started a revolution. Now reality shows dominate. They're addictive. It's the voyeur in us. We loved snooping into other people's lives. It's basic human curiosity.

Most of them are crap for entertainment purposes and can be pretty hyped sometimes. As the wise say, any addition to the truth is a subtraction from it. I do watch them sometimes though from pure curiosity on what our society today deems acceptable and the kind of biases broadcast that inevitably corrupt the naive. Reality may seem irrational but the strange things we view actually happen in real life though often times they seem far-fetched and therefor beyond our imagination. Truth is sometimes stranger than fiction.

reality shows do psychologically damage to young people . they show a bad side to human nature. then it is accepted as truth . it is a good ratings winner for the channel but it degrades human needs and wants. it is encouraging people to be socail negative creatures. and its the origin to all anti socail behavior. and yet we love it.the younger generation of teenagers see it as great TV and sometimes say its great entertainment. it seems no one really cares what harm it brings. if its on TV it must be right and yet right around the country social welfare workers are trying to get rid of anti-social behavior in young teenagers and it goes around and around of one big circle. there is a lot of bad programing and it has detrimental to society's health and well being. i do not watch it but DVDs and i am a lot happier gone are the days we uist to have genuine happy friendly shows. and maybe one day the tide will turn
