Self preservation as well as being selfish and self centered.

Divya ... Not all people feel that way, but you're right ... Many people do. The successes one can achieve as part of a group are much, much greater and worthy of praise than individual pursuits, I feel.

There's more to your question than meets the eye. It's a GREAT question, actually, and worth addressing in forums such as these.

However, the people that need to ponder this most won't see it ... And if they DO see it, they may be too wrapped up in their old, self-centered pursuits to realize that whatever they're chasing cannot be achieved. One day, though, they might look in the mirror and ask themselves: "What have I achieved and enjoyed from all the selfish and hurtful acts I've perpetrated throughout my life?" If/when they realize the answer is "zero/nothing," only then might they begin to awaken and see that going alone while "climbing over" and stomping on others along the way is not the right path to take.

Great question, Divya. Thanks.

I call it the terrible effect of capitalism. It constantly generate cravings among the homo sapiens to get into control of everything. Their demands, their wishes, the list goes on. This tendency has resulted in moral drift and make all of us of bit self-conscious in this age of cut-throat competition. Have you every visited a small place where people live close by. The feeling of helping each other is more than the places where people leads a nuclear life. For example the metro cities where people keep running to secure themselves in every sphere of life. So people better start understanding each other more in midst of their quest for financial, emotional security they seek alone.

Because they can think of nothing higher to worship than themselves. Self-worship is the crippling idolatry of our era. It is also the biggest cause of depression at present (IMHO). Our aspirations exceed ourselves so we will be miserable if we limit our actions to self-benefit.

Research Project: find out who are the truly happiest people (NOT the ones professing to be having the best time) and why.

You have to love yourself and only then you can love others.

People do think of others also, otherwise how will there be so many charitable organisations and so many NGOs doing social work throughout the world.

If you dont thik of your benefit then you will become a beggar.

every one thinks about her/him self.
nobody cares about the world around them. they all live in their own bubbles with their own circle of friends. they should come out into the world and see what the world is like and understand that everything cannot go his/her own way. they want their own comforts and dont care if they are harming something else just to get that comfort. they think that the world revolves around them!
well not that I am any different...lol!

the self preservation instinct.

people are naturally selfish, on of the first things a child will learn is to lie and manipulate people (his mother).

why? just because he can get away with it. and if he doesnt? well tough luck and try again another time.
