I bought a 1988 ford taurus wagon yesterday, and while driving it today, it ceased to go forward. It will now only go in reverse! Is it possible that the transmission isn't blown, or is this it?? It was slipping a little right before it happened. Any suggestions, or know where to get a good, low priced used transmission??

I have a 1994 Taurus Sedan, and my tranny seemed to be giving me problems. Then it dawned on me that there was too much play in the gearshift. This caused the tranny not to be engaged properly. There is a link under the dash (below the steering wheel) You can tighten this with an allen key--this will cost you nothing, if it is the problem.

Check the Fluid Level.

Otherwise you need the Transmission rebuilt or put a new 1 in which ever is mroe reasonable.

If there is a Red Puddle then you may have a bad seal, hose that leaked or a Crack in the trans block. If the Crack in the clock is about 3/4" long you need a ne Transmission.

if fluid is full and linkages are correct and trans really is shot go to a reputable salvage yard and purchase one with a written warranty then find a decent shop to install it realizing that the shop can only guarantee proper installation of [your part] the next cheapest is for the shop to provide the tranny they usually add as much as 50% to tranny price and then be willing to warranty the whole job [ note it is always best to replace the torque converter and axle seals and install a new filter and pan gasket on the used tranny and don't forget to flush the cooler and lines]

yup, sounds like a transmission problem. Low fluid can cause this, but if the fluid is fine, The tranny is probably shot, sorry to say.
