A process of moving molecules across a cell membrane without requiring any energy (ATP). Diffusion, osmosis, and filtration are all examples of passive processes.

Passive transport occurs without the need of ATP. This happens because of diffusion gradients; the molecules can move in/out freely according to the gradient.

diffusion and osmosis are passive transports while endocytosis is not. in osmosis and diffusion the cell does not have to do anything, but during endocytosis the cell has to work by engulfing the substance and has to repair itself afterwards, thus wasting energy.
