why are they marching in? where the heck have they come from? and what is the number "You'd" wanna be in? I suggest 6... any advice?

They are mean to be marching into heaven from their earthly lives.
In this case number can be defined as "the full count of a collection or company" meaning the person wishes to be counted amongst the quota of saints, or within their numbers.

Don't try to make a simple song difficult, just accept they are marching in, from heaven one would most probably surmise, and you can be ready to great them when they get here.
The number,
a musical number not a literal or numeric number.
Don't make it too difficult, you scare the children.
