Do you think racists should be punished for what they say and do?
In my opinion yes they should!

Racists are basically bullies. Bullies should be punished. The big question is, what do we do to punish them?

Racists believe that people are different because they look different, act different or speak different.

However, the whole concept of race is wrong. There is only one race, and it is human. Genetically there are fewer differences between any two individuals of the human race than there are between any two chimpanzees in any troupe in the wild.

Even with the additional genetic difference they have found in the human genome recently, there are fewer differences than found in two puppies born in the same litter with the same parent dogs than there are between any two people picked at random on the planet.

Race is a concept that was created by Europeans during colonization to allow them to justify invading and subjugating the 'native' peoples of those lands. Before then, if someone was of a different color, it never mattered, and they were accepted into the communities they settled in.

It is too bad that we still do not have this tolerance.

Well we have the freedom of speech , so a person has a God given right to speak their mind , it is us the listeners who must act ,do and stand up to words that are inflamatory! Whenever I hear someone denigrate another person , or belief or whatever , if is inflamatory I will stand up and tell them off! Racism is not just not ignorance ,there is hate there too, and words can kill you know, but if you let a racist just go by then you are part of the problem , I say hit them where it hurts , at their own history! Most whites of English speaking ,and if racist ,they have very little knowledge of the whys ,when and how they happened to be in the new world we call America! Hugs.

I am a black woman and I completely disagree with you regarding what they say. First and foremost here in America Free Speech gives you the right to feel and say whatever you want. What any person does regardless if they are racist or not...if it is violent or causes another person harm...then like all criminals...yes they should be punished. though I disagree with hating or disliking someone because of their race, culture, sex, age, homosexual, trans-gender,,,whatever is stupid...the fact is when a racist opens there mouth...they are entitled to say what they want. I just hope that the people around them can take away a lesson from it. The problem lays with the parent raising hateful children. Most racist are raised that way. Though the majority of us know that it is wrong, who are we to say how one should raise their children. As long as people can openly speak their views and beliefs then others can learn and know what is going on around them. When people have to keep it hush hush, is when we are really in trouble. Again, no one has any right to hurt others physically and that isn't just racist it is criminal.

How are you going to decide who's racist and whose not? We ALL make racist remarks or judge people by their race or skin color without realizing it. Who is to say what is considered racist and what isn't? How will you distribute punishment? How will you decide the punishment?

Bottom line is, you can't make people think or behave any way you want them to. We all have equal rights as human beings. If you start punishing racism, you will open up the Pandora's Box. Why not punish people for the way they look at you? Why not punish them for name calling?

As wrong as racism is, it was, is and will be in our society along with lots of other unpleasant traits that we humans picked up along the way.

I think they are...there are laws against 'racial abuse'...but being picked on for your race is just as much of an issue as being slated for wearing glasses or for having differant hair, or any other reason to do with being differant to the majority. The fact that its race, I don't think makes the situation any different. People will isolate for whatever reasons they can find if it makes them feel important. But also remember, people believe what they are told. If they are racist, its due to fear of the unknown and ignorance and what they're family taught them. I don't personally know anyone that is racist, but I do feel very sorry for the people that are so caught up in all that crap they feel the need to segregate.xx

They are being punished, so what's the purpose of your question?

Well, some of them anyway. Especially if the victim is a person of color or gay. The suspect is automatically prosecuted under various hate crime laws.

Unfortunately, it's open season on white people. So, some are punished, some are not. This is wrong, as people should all be treated the same.

People have the right to believe what they want, but they don't have the right to hurt another person because of racist beliefs.
