This is actually a technical issue of names. A spider is technically an arachnid, with eight legs and a two-segment body. This class includes other fun friends such as scorpions, ticks, and mites. They have many of the same properties as insects, but are classified differently. They are invertebrates (have no backbone), and also have those little leg things on the sides of their mouths to aid in eating (they're called chelicerae and may contain venom).

1. In a simplified nutshell, insects are defined as arthropods with 6 legs and 3 body segments. Spiders are defined as arthropods with 8 legs and 2 body segments. Centipedes aren't insects, they're chilopods, and are defined as arthropods with many body segments and many legs, one pair per body segment. Caterpillars do have only six legs, although they may have a number of extra 'false legs' that they lose when they metamorphose into the adult form. If you disagree about the classification of caterpillars, you might want to decide how an animal that isn't an insect as a 'baby' becomes an insect when it grows up. That seems like a neat trick. 2. Arachnids are animals because they have the characteristics of animals - you could look it up. To put it another way, they're not plants, microbes or fungi, so what else would you call them?

Scientists classify only certain creatures as insects. They have an exoskeleton and jointed legs. They have to have six legs, antennae and three body segments. Many also have two pairs of wings. Insects include ants, beetles, moths, flies and more.
There are many creatures that resemble insects in that they have an exoskeleton and jointed legs, but they have two body segments, eight legs and no antennae or wings. They include spiders and ticks. These are not called insects, they are called arachnids.
Spiders and arachnids together are part of a group of animals called arthropods.
Mammals are not arthropods, they are chordates. There are many types of animals. They include chordates (fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals), arthropods (arachnids and insects), molluscs, and many types of worms.
Does that clear it up for you?

There are several classifications, bugs, insects and spiders. Spiders are Arachnids. related to other critters like scorpions. Insects are the more common things we see, like house flies, ants or wasp. Bugs are critters like pill bugs or millipedes.
Therefor a spider is not an insect. Does not share many of the same anatomical characteristics. Spiders are properly refer to as, spiders.

Spiders and insects are cousins, in that spiders are arachnids, and arachnids are arthropods, as are insects. They are on different branches of the arthropod family tree. Other arachnids include mites, ticks and scorpions. The arthropods also include crustaceans. Hope that helps!
