40 weeks is gestation. Yes, it is 10 months. But a woman can go into labor anytime after 37 weeks.

Months are a thing of the past and it is easier to talk in weeks. Your pregnancy is calculated from the first day of your last period. If the first day of your last period was a Sunday for instance your due on a Sunday 40 weeks from that, although technically you were not pregnant for the first two until you conceived. I think you may find that 40 weeks is not really 10 months as that would mean the final two months of the year would have 12 weeks in them. The confusion may also arise as you may be calculating each month as 28 days. The average first pregnancy is 41 weeks and 1 day and second and subsequent 40 weeks and 6 days. In fact some countries now calculate a pregnancy to be 41 weeks and I think we should be doing the same.

First, one month is more than four weeks: Four weeks is 28 days, but a month has 30 or 31(February being the only exception).
Second, 40 weeks of pregnancy is counted from the beginning of the last period, which is normally about two weeks before the conception.
Example: Your period started on 01.01. You get pregnant on 15.01. Then you should expect the baby to be born around 08.10.
However, bear in mind that this is only an idealized average. Real pregnancies count as "normal" if they are between 36 (or 37?) and 42 weeks long.

You are pregnant for about 9 regular months or 10 lunar months.
First two weeks of pregnancy aren't counted, because you haven't ovulated yet. A woman's monthly cycle is based on a lunar calendar with each month having only 28 days, this same calendar is used in determining duration of pregnancy(gestational weeks). Gestational weeks are the actual age of the unborn child.
You are't actually pregnant at 1 week. Pregnancy is counted form the first day of your last menstrual period and you're not likely to ovulate and conceive a child until about 2 weeks after that day. You find out that you are pregnant at about 4 or 5 weeks along, when you've actually missed your next period.

You do 'carry' for 40 weeks. They take it from the first day of your last period so obviously u arent actually pregnant then as u are menstruating but u get pregnant usually around 2 weeks after your period, although it could actually be any time after but they say 2 weeks as that is when u r most fertile. Due to them taking it from the first day of your last period, u are pregnant for approximately 40 weeks.
