The BAFTAs are basically the British version of the OSCARS. Although they are considered quite reputable there is defintely a bias towards British nominess when the awards are dolled out. It has been hosted for many years by Stephen Fry whose witty satirical take on the ceremony is very funny. However, this year I believe Jonathon Ross is doing it.

Promotes and rewards the best in U.K. film, television, and interactive media.
BAFTA's main film awards ceremony is known as the British Academy Film Awards, taking place since 2000 in the flagship Odeon cinema on Leicester Square. The ceremony used to take place in April or May, but from 2002 onwards it takes place in February in order to precede the Oscars. The awards are mostly open to all nationalities, though there is an award for Best British Film and Best British Director, Producer or Writer for their first feature film.

They, along with any other film award, are only important if you are in the film industry. Those awards programs are just designed to further hype the industry and promote themselves even more.
They are pointless really.
