I haven't read the Dark Tower, but my favorite Stephen King is The Talisman. More original than many of his stories, and more to the point of the story, more action. I agree that he is a bit long winded in the superflous description department. Maybe that's why I stopped reading them years ago. I enjoyed the books I read, I just feel like I finished with him as an author somewhere around Misery.

Skeleton Crew and Nightmares and Dreamscapes are the other two collections of short stories which are all good. The Dark Tower is closely related to Insomnia, Rose Madder (not one of his best but the main character enters Roland's world via a painting), Salem's Lot doesn't mention DT but is related to it via a character. Other links are to the short story 'Everything's Eventual features Dinky who reappears in the final Dark Tower books.
I have a brilliant book called The Road to the Dark Tower: Exploring Stephen King's Magnus Opus by Bev Vincent and Stephen King - it tells you every little link and has commentary from King. It is on amazon. Also go to www.thedarktower.net

I don't know which collection this story is in, but "Mrs. Todd's Shortcut" is a favorite of mine. Also, "The Eye of the Dragon." It's book-length, but so unlike most things that Stephen King writes (not that that is a good or bad thing, just interesting to note.)

I also love Mrs Todd's Shortcut, and Crouch End is another favourite. In the novels, I found The Shining un-put-downable but Insomnia and The Stand were totally boring. If you like the stories get 'Skeleton Crew' - there's a great selection in there (I think you might find 'Mrs Todd' in there, but I can't remember!)

The Dark Tower series is fantastic, but so are the others books which refer to it, such as Insomnia and Black House.
Unrelated to these, but one which flows beautifully is The Stand - generally held to be his best by many of his fans, and the one which he says he is most proud of after The Dark Tower.

Well i usually don't like Stephen King because I find him too slow to get to the point...but I did enjoy 'Nightmares & Dreamscapes' (which are short stories), The Long Walk, Gerald's Game, and 'Different Seasons'.
