Have you made any recent changes to your system?

If yes, hardware or software?

If hardware; it could be...
~ device may not be compatible with your system
~ device needs to be configured and/or have new driver installed
~ device causing hardware conflict - check System Information
~ uninstall & reinstall device via Add/Remove Hardware Wizard

If software; it could be...
~ software may not be compatible with your system
~ software is not made by a reputible company
~ POSSIBLE VIRUS ACTIVITY

If no hardware or software has been installed; it could be...
~ memory issue - may need to reseat RAM or install more
~ less than 20% space available on drive - may need 2 reformat
~ power supply may be going out & needs 2 be replaced

Also, what is the last part of the following error message?
"windows has encountered a problem..."

Choice A: "...and needs to restart."
Choice B: "...and needs to shutdown."

If Choice A, then issue is most likely software - related.
If Choice B, then issue is most likely hardware - related.

I recommend having Windows run CHKDSK on your system.

Just follow the steps listed below to implement procedure:
~ Go to 'My Computer'
~ Right-click on 'Local Disk (C:)'
~ Select 'Properties'
~ Click on 'Tools' tab
~ Click on 'Check Now' button in Error-checking section
~ Select both boxes for 'Check disk options'
~ Then click 'Start' button
~ Will be prompted to restart windows, for CHKDSK to perform
~ Close all open windows
~ Click 'Start'
~ Click 'Turn Off Computer'
~ Click 'Restart'

The system will reboot and start the CHKDSK procedure.
Procedure should take approximately 20-30 minutes.

There are 5 Stages in the CHKDSK procedure.
Test results will be displayed after the 5th stage completes.
Message only appears for a few seconds, so pay attention.

My computer used to restart by itself.. over a long period of time the restarts became more frequent until it was restarting before windows even loaded. Turned out to be the power supply was bad. Got a new one, and it worked perfectly after that.

It sounds like something is up with your bios configuration in the rom. You might want to look on your computer manufacturer's website and see if they have a update for the bios on your computer. If so, download the update and try running it. If does not resolve the problem, then it may be something with the motherboard on the computer.
