Most chimneys have a lid, made so that smoke can pass out laterally ( through the sides), but rain can't come down.

The rain will be absorbed in the soot which will have built up over the years - or as suggested the chimney will have been blocked off. As for rain and snow they are the source of all life.

It tends to get absorbed by the brickwork on the way down, and most chimneys have a bend in them, probably to stop this happening..

For the same reason that feathers fall more slowly than rain. The same mass of material is spread out further and the surface area is increased, so increasing the air resistance and slowing the fall.

Check and make sure jolly ol' saint nick aint stuck in there from Christmas time. Im sure he would block some of that snow and water. Plus it would explain why he didnt make it to my crib.
