I would suggest fake plants, as goldfish are quite greedy fish and will eat the real ones, you'll end up spending a fortune having to replace real plants.
Plus with fake plants you won't have the worry of rotting leaves or having snails and other nasties being introduced, which happens with real plants.
If you already have a decent filter and good aeration there will be no real benefit in terms of real plants giving oxygen to your tank.

Plants help fish feel a little more comfortable and secure.. But if you have your tank in a good place and do not have kids thundering past it every few minutes, the goldfish wouldn't really care for plants except as a snack.. Indeed if you kept real plants in a goldfish tank, you'd get frustrated with the fish pulling everything out every few hours.. Most people like plants in a goldfish tank for aesthetic reasons. So if you really intend to put some in, I'd really recommend you get plastic ones..

They really do not need either, but i would probably stay away from live in a goldfish tank. It helps to have fairly bright lighting for a plant tank. It would seem difficult to plant it densely enough to avoid algae blooms with the goldfish rummaging through them. if the plants start to die you will have a tough time keeping the tank"balanced" so to speak. Your life will just be easier going with fake.

Real plants are always better because they provide oxygen but goldfish just ruin plants
Most pet shops will sell you a plant which is a really good oxygenator for gold fish

Goldfish usually require a continuous supply of Oxygen for breathing. Therefore, Dissolved Oxygen in water should be provided by fresh water plants in day, the scenario changes in night, as the plant consume oxygen in night, but cannot photosynthetize during night.
The fresh plants often carry various types of water creatures which may be harmful for fish.
Always wash the fresh plants in clean water and dip the plants in Potassium permanganate solution for 3-4 minutes , wash them again with clean water thoroughly . Now you can plant them in your tanks.
Do not forget that the algae grows on the leaves of these plants which is a good food for your fish.

It doesn't really matter but I would go with real plants because they keep the water cleaner by obsorbing the fish waste and bacteira. You don't need to change the water as much either with real plants. Fake plants can also hurt the fish by the plastic being to sharp and cutting them!

Goldfish just love salad & will eat any plants in the tank & any that you do put in there will be uprooted by the fish digging around in the gravel. Best to use plastic.

most fish would purfer live plants but be warned, the goldies will eat them.
stick to hardier species like java fern and java moss.
and the 3 second memory is a load of rubbush, tests prove they don't they also in time get know there owner.
soinds silly i know but it's true, fish are quite intelligent.
