I want to build a timber framework and cover it in slatted timber to allow ventilation and easy access to change cylinders when necessary. Open to suggestions as to what would look sympathetic and rustic

If you want to make it out of wood, you have to find a wood that goes with the rest of the wood around the outside of your house.
A common wood is cedar which is used in fences. If you leave it alone it will turn a nice silver gray color. Once you find the perfect color, you can use a clear coat to keep it that color for a few years. You will have to reapply the coat every 4 years or so.

Gas cylinders on the patio. What kind of building is this. Surely there is a better place to put the gas cylinders and just extend the piping.

i have a cylinder outside , its hidden in a green plastic dustbin w a hole in the side for the pipe , looks ok , but i guess if u used construction timber (preservative applied ) and made a box with a sloping lid covered in roofing felt (lotsa different colours) itd look ok , then u could stain it to suit
