This was the way we played at parties. At the start of the game, everybody picks a slip of paper out of a hat. One of those slips has the word "detective" and the other has the word "murderer," the rest are blank (the murderer should not reveal their identity). The detective leaves the room and the lights are dimmed. Everybody mills around until the murderer tells one of the other players that they are dead. The victim screams to signify their murder, and the lights are turned back on as fast as possible. When the lights come on, everybody has to freeze. The detective then comes in to try to figure out who the murderer is.

It is hide and seek played in the dark - it is scary when you are a kid because you are hiding and its pitch black and you cannot see if someone is coming to find you, scary for the finder also because you don't know if someone is going to jump out at you.
This is how we used to play it when we were younger anyway.
